Hotel remarketing: an ad for the guest who saw a room

Remarketing makes sense for people who saw a room or started a booking. Not for every website visitor. Audience, a 14 day window, excluding guests who booked, and a frequency cap.

Published: Updated: 3 min read

Short answer

Hotel remarketing makes sense for people who saw available rooms or started a booking and did not finish it. The window is 7 to 14 days, guests who booked are excluded and frequency stays around 3 impressions. Some of these guests would return without the ad, so the effect is tested, not assumed.

  • The audience comes from the booking engine, not from every website visitor.
  • Without a Meta pixel and GA4 on the engine there is no audience. In our check 22 of 84 hotels have the pixel on the homepage.
  • A returning guest does not prove the ad brought them back. Test with a pause or a lift test.
A guest revisits a boutique hotel offer after an earlier website visit.
Remarketing returns a relevant offer to an interested guest, with consent and frequency limits.

AI illustration

Hotel remarketing makes sense for people who saw available rooms or started a booking and did not finish. Not for everyone who opened the website. A guest who picked a room for 12 July knows what they want. The ad reminds them of the dates and of a reason to book direct.

Who to include, who to exclude

The audience comes from the booking engine, not the homepage:

  • view_item_list - saw available rooms for the dates
  • add_to_cart - picked a room and a rate
  • begin_checkout - started entering details

I exclude guests who booked, purchase within the same window. Otherwise the hotel pays for an ad to a guest who has already paid for the room.

This needs measurement on the engine. In our check of 84 Croatian hotels, 22 have a Meta pixel on the homepage. Without the pixel and GA4 on the engine the audience does not exist. Details are in the direct booking study.

Window and frequency

A window of 7 to 14 days for summer dates. Up to 30 days when the guest is looking at dates far ahead.

On Google Display I set a cap of 3 impressions per user per day. Meta has no hard cap in sales campaigns. I watch 7 day frequency and change the creative when it goes above 3.

The creative carries what the guest does not get on Booking.com: the direct rate, breakfast, late check-out or flexible cancellation. The same room photo they have already seen tells them nothing new.

What it costs, with an example

Example: 1,000 people saw a room and did not book. 2% book after the ad. Media is 400 EUR.

ItemCalculation
Audience1,000
Bookings at 2%20
Media400 EUR
Media per booking400 / 20 = 20 EUR

On a 600 EUR stay a 15% OTA commission is 90 EUR. That is why remarketing looks cheap. But some of those 20 guests would have booked without the ad.

Did the ad bring the booking

Attribution in Google Ads and Meta does not separate this. Both platforms will claim the guest who would have come back anyway.

The simplest test: two weeks of pause in a quieter period, then compare direct bookings from returning visitors with the period before. For larger budgets Meta has Conversion Lift, where part of the audience does not see the ad.

If bookings do not move during the pause, remarketing was spending money on guests who were coming anyway.

Advertising cookies in the EU need consent. Consent Mode v2 has to be set up. The audience is smaller than the number of visitors, and that is normal.

Frequently asked questions

Who should see a hotel remarketing ad?

People who saw available rooms or started a booking on the engine and did not finish. A visitor who read a blog post about the beach is not the same audience as a guest who picked a room for 12 July.

For how long and how often?

A window of 7 to 14 days for summer dates, up to 30 days for enquiries far ahead. On Google Display I set a cap of 3 impressions per user per day. Meta has no hard cap for sales campaigns, so I change the creative when 7 day frequency goes above 3.

How do I know the ad brought the booking?

Not from attribution alone. Part of the audience would come back without the ad. The simplest test is a two week pause in a quieter period and a comparison of direct bookings from returning visitors. Meta also offers a Conversion Lift test for larger budgets.

Can remarketing run without cookie consent?

No. Advertising cookies in the EU need consent. Consent Mode v2 has to be in place, and the audience is smaller than the number of visitors because of it.
