How to increase direct bookings: 6 checks from 84 Croatian hotels

Before the next ad, check six things: your own rate on Google Hotels, parity, a reason to book direct, engine measurement, German language and brand searches. These are the points where Croatian hotels most often lose the guest.

Short answer

Direct bookings grow when the guest sees the hotel's rate on Google, when the website is not more expensive than Booking.com, when the homepage says why to book direct and when the booking engine measures sales. In our check of 84 Croatian hotels, 54% do not show their own rate on Google Hotels and only 25% of homepages mention booking direct.

  • 54% of hotels with rates on Google Hotels do not show their own rate.
  • For 90% of hotels with their own rate, at least one seller is cheaper.
  • Only 25% of homepages say why to book direct.

Direct bookings do not grow from one ad. They grow when the guest sees the hotel's rate on Google, when the website is not more expensive than Booking.com and when the homepage says why to book direct. In October 2026 we checked 84 Croatian 4 and 5 star hotels. These are the points where they most often lose the guest.

1. Your own rate on Google Hotels

Of 48 hotels with rates on Google Hotels, 26 do not show their own rate. Only intermediaries. A guest searching for the hotel's name sees Booking.com, Expedia and Agoda, and not the hotel website.

Your own rate comes through a booking engine or channel manager connected to Google. Free booking links cost nothing. Paid Google Hotel Ads are the next step, not the first. When they make sense is in the article on Google Hotel Ads.

2. Parity

For 19 of 21 hotels with their own rate, at least one seller offered a lower rate for the same date. The median gap is 16%. When the website is more expensive, the ad pays for a click from a guest who will book somewhere else.

Parity first, ads second. More in the article on rate parity.

3. A reason on the homepage

Only 21 of 84 homepages mention the best rate or booking direct. The guest doesn't know why to book on the website. One concrete reason is enough: breakfast, late check-out, parking, flexible cancellation or a lower rate. The same reason goes into the ad and into the booking engine.

4. Booking engine measurement

23 of 36 booking pages had no analytics tag at all. Without it the hotel doesn't know which channel brings bookings, and Google Ads optimises for clicks. How to fix it is in the article Phobs and GA4.

5. The guest's language

34 of 84 hotels have no German version of the website. Guests from Germany and Austria are among the largest markets for Istria and Kvarner. When the website does not speak their language, they book where it does, on Booking.com.

6. Brand searches

A guest who types the hotel's name is already looking for you. If intermediaries' ads sit above the website, some of these guests end up on Booking.com and the hotel pays commission on its own name. A brand campaign is the cheapest click in the whole account. Measure it separately from other campaigns, or it flatters the report.

Why it pays

According to HOTREC's European Hotel Distribution Study 2026, direct channels in Europe fell from 57.6% of overnights in 2013 to 51.3% in 2025. OTAs grew from 19.7% to 29.9%. Direct bookings are cancelled 9.1% of the time, Booking.com 19.0%. Every stay brought back to the website is commission the hotel does not pay and a guest whose email stays with the hotel.

The maths on one stay is in the article on Booking.com commission.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first to get more direct bookings?

Check Google Hotels for your hotel. If only Booking.com and other intermediaries show up, the guest doesn't know your website exists. Your own rate is added through a booking engine or channel manager connected to Google.

Does advertising help if the website is more expensive than Booking.com?

Not much. The guest sees both rates on Google and books the cheaper one. Parity first, ads second.

What should the homepage say?

One concrete reason: best rate, breakfast, late check-out, parking or flexible cancellation for direct bookings. In our check only 21 of 84 homepages had one.

What is the share of direct bookings in Europe?

According to HOTREC, weighted and without chains, direct channels had 51.3% of overnights in 2025, down from 57.6% in 2013. OTA channels grew from 19.7% to 29.9%.
