How to increase direct hotel bookings
Direct bookings give the owner and the director greater control over distribution, price and the relationship with the guest. The aim is to measure the cost of each channel and strengthen the hotel's own channel, rather than remove OTA channels.
What are direct bookings?
For a hotel, a direct booking is a booking made through the hotel website and booking engine, without an intermediary such as Booking.com or Expedia. This includes bookings from organic search, paid campaigns, direct traffic, email or a referral. This page is about hotels, not private accommodation.
Why they matter for your hotel
A direct hotel booking does not pay the OTA commission set in the contract with the platform. Commission is not a universal percentage: it is written in the hotel's contract with the channel. The hotel keeps more control over guest data and communication. A direct booking still has a cost: advertising, technology, payment and maintenance of the booking process. The comparison is in the article Booking commission for a hotel.
OTA channels: benefits and limitations
Booking.com and similar channels provide visibility, reviews and demand from markets where a hotel may not have a strong brand. For many hotels, OTAs are an important part of distribution, particularly for new markets and quieter dates. A healthy strategy aims to gradually strengthen the direct channel while understanding each channel's costs, rather than abandoning OTAs entirely.
The role of the hotel website and booking engine
The hotel website is the foundation of direct bookings. Guests choosing to book directly need relevant information, reassurance and a straightforward booking journey. The booking engine must be fast, easy to use on mobile and transparent about pricing. Every step between the Book Now button and a confirmed booking should be measurable.
Paid channels for direct bookings
Google Ads captures demand at the moment of search - including hotel brand searches and non-brand searches for destinations and accommodation categories. Meta Ads supports inspiration, remarketing and offer promotion. Both channels require accurate tracking so management can see actual bookings, not just clicks.
Organic search and direct traffic
Organic and direct traffic often generate bookings without media spend, but they are not free - they require investment in the website, content, SEO and brand. A hotel with a strong brand will have a significant share of direct traffic. That is positive, but it does not mean paid channels are unnecessary for growth in new markets.
Tracking and attribution
Without GA4 tracking and booking engine analytics, a hotel cannot reliably know how many direct bookings each channel generates. Cross-domain tracking, purchase events and data validation are prerequisites for any serious direct booking strategy.
Cost per booking and comparison with OTA commission
The cost of a direct booking includes media spend, agency fees, technology, payment processing and sometimes lower conversion rates at the outset. A comparison with OTA commission only makes sense when all costs are included, not just media spend. Use our OTA commission calculator for an illustrative comparison.
Management reporting
A monthly management report should show bookings, revenue, cost per booking, performance by channel and market, and specific priorities. Without it, a direct booking strategy remains guesswork.
Realistic expectations
Increasing direct bookings is a gradual process that depends on brand demand, website quality, the booking engine, the offer, seasonality and ongoing investment. There is no universal formula or guaranteed result, but there is a clear system of measurement and improvement that gives management control.
How we work with a hotel
Nikton Hospitality is a hotel marketing agency based in Zagreb. We work remotely with independent 4- and 5-star hotels, including hotels in Austria and Germany.
Onboarding means access to Google Ads, Meta, GA4 and the booking engine, an agreed goal, a monthly report and one monthly conversation.
For hotels in Austria and Germany, reports, emails and documents are in German. Calls and meetings are in English.
We work with the booking engine the hotel already uses. Before we start, we check how the engine sends data to GA4 and what needs to be fixed.
A visit to the hotel in Austria or Germany is possible by agreement.
Monthly management from €1,200 + VAT. The starting scope covers one hotel and one agreed advertising channel - Google Ads or Meta Ads. It includes campaign optimisation, performance monitoring through the existing measurement system, a monthly report and one monthly conversation.
