Discover where guests drop off before completing a booking

We map the journey from Book Now click to confirmed booking so management can see where users abandon it and which channels generate more valuable demand.

Ongoing monthly management

How we work with a hotel

Nikton Hospitality is a hotel marketing agency based in Zagreb. We work remotely with independent 4- and 5-star hotels, including hotels in Austria and Germany.

Onboarding means access to Google Ads, Meta, GA4 and the booking engine, an agreed goal, a monthly report and one monthly conversation.

For hotels in Austria and Germany, reports, emails and documents are in German. Calls and meetings are in English.

We work with the booking engine the hotel already uses. Before we start, we check how the engine sends data to GA4 and what needs to be fixed.

A visit to the hotel in Austria or Germany is possible by agreement.

Monthly management from €1,200 + VAT. The starting scope covers one hotel and one agreed advertising channel - Google Ads or Meta Ads. It includes campaign optimisation, performance monitoring through the existing measurement system, a monthly report and one monthly conversation.

What is booking engine analytics?

Booking engine analytics tracks the journey from the hotel website through checking availability to a confirmed booking. It helps distinguish interest, abandonment and completed purchases, and connect bookings to their traffic source. Measurement capabilities depend on the engine, access and guests' consent choices.

The scope and fee for this service are agreed separately based on your hotel's goals, the current system and the access required.

The hotel can have quality traffic and still lose bookings within the booking process

Google Ads, Meta campaigns, organic traffic and direct visits can bring a large number of users to the hotel website. But clicking on Book Now is not yet a booking. Between the interest and the confirmed booking, the user must choose the dates, find the available room, understand the price and conditions, choose accommodation, enter data and complete the checkout. If the hotel only monitors web visits and final bookings, it doesn’t see what’s going on between those two moments.

Then it's not clear:

  • -whether users are entering the booking engine
  • -whether users find available rooms
  • -whether they drop off after seeing the price
  • -whether there is a mobile experience problem
  • -whether the campaign source is lost when entering the booking engine
  • -whether the campaigns bring relevant or only low-cost demand

Business impact

Without booking funnel analytics it is difficult to know whether to change the campaign, offer or the booking process itself. If bookings fall, the cause is not always in advertising. The problem may be:

  • -no availability for the requested dates
  • -unclear presentation of rooms
  • -prices displayed too early or too late
  • -cancellation conditions or mandatory minimum stay
  • -a slow or confusing mobile checkout
  • -change of language or currency
  • -technical error or loss of attribution between the website and the booking engine
  • -too many steps to complete the booking

Without data, management may mistakenly conclude that campaign budgets need to increase, even though the actual problem occurs after users reach the booking engine. Consequences include higher cost per booking, less effective use of paid and organic traffic, unclear priorities for website and booking system development, slower detection of technical issues, lost bookings for dates that need occupancy, and weaker control over direct channel revenue.

From Book Now click to confirmed booking

We view the booking funnel as a series of commercially important steps. A typical process includes:

  • -click on Book Now
  • -transition to a booking engine
  • -selecting dates and the number of guests
  • -display of available rooms and prices
  • -choice of room or package
  • -entering personal data
  • -selection of additional services or conditions
  • -checkout and payment
  • -confirmed booking

Some booking engines allow more detailed tracking, and some give only part of these steps. That is why we first determine what the booking engine technically supports, what data we can reliably measure, what we can get from GA4 and GTM, what we can confirm from the booking system itself, and where there are limitations or estimates. We do not present the estimate as a directly measured result.

What management receives each month

Management gets a clear answer to questions like:

  • -How many users of the web enter the booking engine?
  • -How many of them see the available rooms?
  • -At which step do most users abandon the booking?
  • -Is there a difference between mobile and desktop processes?
  • -Which channels bring users who are completing a booking?
  • -Which channels generate high traffic but weak booking performance?
  • -What is the average booking value, and which markets generate more valuable bookings?
  • -Is there a problem with a particular language, currency or device?
  • -Have technical changes improved progression through the funnel?
  • -Which problem should be solved first?

Alongside a chart of drop-offs between steps, management receives an explanation of what each drop may mean and a recommendation for the next specific action.

Relevant KPIs

There is no universal "good" booking conversion rate for each hotel. The result depends on the market, price, type of hotel, booking window, season, availability and quality of traffic.

  • Book Now clicks
  • the rate of transition from the website to the booking engine
  • entries in the booking engine by channel
  • entries by market, device and language

Funnel progression

  • available room views
  • room selection rate
  • checkout starts and checkout completion rate
  • abandonment at each step
  • the time between entry and booking

How we work together

Step 1

Process mapping

We review the hotel’s website, Book Now CTAs, booking engine, booking steps and available information.

Step 2

Checking and setting up measurement

We define events, check cross-domain tracking, bookings, revenue, currency and attribution quality.

Step 3

Funnel analysis

We identify where users abandon the process, how behaviour differs by device, market and channel, and which issue has the greatest commercial priority.

Step 4

Recommendations and monthly monitoring

We define concrete changes, coordinate providers and developers, and monitor the impact of the improvements made.

Connection with direct bookings and occupancy

Every direct online booking goes through the booking engine. Its effectiveness therefore directly affects the value the hotel receives from traffic it already pays for or generates organically.

If a campaign attracts users for quieter dates, booking analytics should show:

  • -whether they entered the booking process
  • -whether they found an available room
  • -where they dropped off
  • -the value of completed bookings
  • -whether the problem lies in traffic quality or the booking experience

This allows for a better decision:

  • -increase or reduce the budget
  • -change the market
  • -adjust the offer
  • -improve the landing page
  • -change the terms
  • -resolve a technical problem
  • -optimize mobile checkout

The aim goes beyond increasing the conversion rate. It is to increase valuable bookings and revenue for dates that matter commercially to the hotel.

What is not included

  • -replacing the booking engine or developing a new booking system
  • -programming changes within the booking engine
  • -booking engine provider licences and fees
  • -complete redesign of the hotel website
  • -price changes, revenue management and channel management
  • -OTA inventory management and payment gateway development
  • -technical changes that the provider does not allow
  • -guarantee that every step can be monitored in every system
  • -initial implementation or major tracking repairs without a separate setup project

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between booking engine analytics and GA4 setup?

The GA4 setup provides technical data collection. Booking engine analytics uses this data to answer business questions: where users give up, which channel leads to better demand, what is the value of the booking, whether there is a problem on the mobile device and what needs to be improved first. In other words, GA4 is a tool. Booking engine analytics is a way to use data to manage your results.

Do you work with our existing booking engine?

Yes. We work with the existing system and coordinate the booking engine provider and website developer. Tracking capabilities depend on the particular provider: some systems offer a good dataLayer and ecommerce support, while others expose only a limited dataset.

What if the booking engine does not allow you to track all the steps?

First, we determine what is technically available. We can combine hotel website events, booking engine data, GA4 data, confirmed bookings and provider reports. We clearly indicate what is directly measured, and what constitutes a partial picture or estimate. We don't invent precision that the system doesn't allow.

Why is mobile checkout so important?

Much of the hotel traffic comes from mobile devices, but users may have more difficulty entering dates, viewing rooms, reading conditions, filling out forms, paying, and returning to the previous step. If mobile users give up significantly more often, the problem may be in UX, speed, technical performance, or the way the offer is presented.

Why can the number of bookings fall even though traffic has increased?

Higher traffic does not automatically mean higher quality demand. Bookings can fall due to lower availability, higher prices, changing markets or audiences, irrelevant traffic, technical problems, poor mobile process, restrictive conditions, longer booking window or seasonality. Booking analytics helps distinguish the problem of traffic from the problem of the booking process.

How long does it take to set up booking engine analytics?

It depends on the existing system. If the website, GA4, GTM and booking engine already have a sound implementation, initial validation can be relatively quick. If cross-domain tracking, new events, provider involvement, ecommerce data repairs, duplicate booking fixes or consent alignment are required, setup may take longer and be treated as a separate project.

Can you guarantee a higher conversion rate?

No. Conversion is influenced by price, availability, hotel reputation, quality of offer, market, season, conditions, technical performance and traffic quality. We can guarantee better process visibility, clearer priorities, more credible data and expert recommendations for improvement.
