Study, October 2026
Direct booking in Croatian hotels 2026
Data collected on 29 October 2026. Author: Toni, Nikton Hospitality.
We checked the public websites of 84 independent 4★ and 5★ hotels in Croatia. Each hotel's category was verified in the register of the Ministry of Tourism and Sport. We do not name hotels.
Key findings
64%
of hotels that measure their website have no analytics tag on the booking engine page. 14 of 22.
90%
of hotels with their own price on Google Hotels have at least one seller with a lower price for the same date. 19 of 21. The median gap is 16%.
54%
of hotels with prices on Google Hotels show no price of their own, only intermediaries' prices. 26 of 48.
40%
of hotels have no German version of their website. 34 of 84.
24%
of websites still carry Universal Analytics code, which Google has not processed since July 2023. 20 of 84.
25%
of homepages tell guests why to book direct. 21 of 84.
Booking engine and tracking
Phobs is used by 40 of the 68 hotels whose booking engine we identified (59%). Rentlio is used by 8. Other systems have one to three hotels each.
For 56 of 59 hotels (95%), the booking happens on a different domain from the website. Without cross-domain settings, GA4 does not connect the campaign to the booking.
GA4 is visible on 52 of 84 homepages (62%), GTM on 39 (46%). 16 websites have a Google Ads tag (19%), 22 a Meta pixel (26%). 23 of the 36 booking pages we opened have no tag at all (64%).
Website price and intermediary price
Stay: 11 to 12 November 2026, two adults. Google Hotels display on 29 October 2026.
Of 84 hotels, 79 have a Google Hotels page. 48 hotels had prices for that date. Only 22 of 48 show their own price.
For 19 of the 21 hotels showing their own price, at least one seller offers a lower price, with a median gap of 16%. Excluding member and customised prices, this holds for 16 of 21. Booking.com was cheaper than the hotel's own website for 5 of the 17 hotels where both were shown. The hotel's own website was the cheapest for 2 of 21.
The comparison does not include cancellation terms or meals. One hotel with an extremely low own price was excluded from the comparison.
Languages
English is on 80 of 84 websites (95%), German on 50 (60%), Italian on 26 (31%), French on 10 (12%). The median is three languages.
37 of 76 multilingual websites (49%) have no hreflang tags, which makes it harder for Google to show the right language version.
SEO and AI visibility
13 of 84 websites (15%) have Hotel structured data. 8 (10%) have an llms.txt file. No hotel blocks AI search engines in robots.txt. Two block model-training bots. Three homepages have no title tag.
Errors on the way to a booking
One website was down because of an expired SSL certificate. One booking link led to a booking engine error message. One 4★ hotel sends its booking button to Booking.com.
Methodology
Sample: 84 independent hotels or small domestic groups, 76 with 4★ and 8 with 5★, from Nikton's database of researched hotels. Chains are not included. The sample is not random.
The category was verified in the Ministry of Tourism and Sport's list of categorised hospitality and tourism facilities, as of 30 September 2026.
Checked on 29 October 2026, automatically in a browser, public pages only: homepage, robots.txt, llms.txt and the booking engine page where the link was identified. No login, no booking and no cookie consent.
Tags that load only after consent are not visible, so the tracking figures are a lower bound. We checked the automated findings manually on a sample of hotels.
What a hotel can check now
- Whether bookings from the booking engine reach GA4, with source and value.
- Whether Google Hotels shows the price from your website and whether it is the lowest.
- Whether the website has a German version if your guests come from Germany and Austria.
- Whether the homepage says why to book direct.
- Whether the old Universal Analytics code has been removed.
