Hotel website UX for direct bookings

How to review a hotel website and booking journey: offer clarity, mobile display, prices and conditions, the transition to the engine and completed booking measurement.

Short answer

The hotel website should clearly present the room and conditions and allow easy transition to availability and confirmed bookings. Priorities are determined by a mobile booking journey test and data verification. The change in design alone does not prove the growth of bookings.

The hotel website and booking engine together should enable the guest to understand the offer, check availability and complete the booking. A UX review therefore covers both systems, especially on a mobile phone. A poor visual detail is not in itself evidence of lost revenue; function and behavior should be checked.

Start with a real offer and dates

Choose one room or package that the hotel wants to sell. Open the page as a new guest and make sure you can quickly understand the location, content of the offer, restrictions and the next step. Photos should match the actual hotel and room category.

There is no universal number of seconds after which every guest leaves. Instead of such an assumption, note a specific obstacle: unreadable text, unclear price, an unavailable offer, or a button that leads to the wrong page.

StepWhat to checkEvidence to record
Room pagePhotos, capacity, facilities and conditionsIs the information compatible with the engine?
Booking call to actionVisibility and function of buttonsDoes it open the right hotel, language and offer?
DatesAvailability and minimum stayCan the guest understand why the dates are unavailable?
Price and rate planIncluded Items, Taxes, and CancellationsDoes the guest understand the total price before the confirmation?
CheckoutFields, error messages and payment methodsCan the procedure be completed on a mobile phone?
ConfirmationBooking status and identifierDoes the confirmation match the actual booking?

Arrange a test booking with your hotel and supplier so that you do not create an actual obligation or take up availability without a cancellation plan.

Transition to a booking engine

Booking engine can be on a different domain or subdomain. It's not an automatic problem. It is important to preserve the context, language and the selected offer when integration supports it, clearly present the hotel and check the tracking of transitions.

Built-in iframes are not always a better solution: they can make mobile display, accessibility or measurement more difficult. Make a decision according to the possibilities of the supplier and the test of the actual user journey. For measurement specification see GA4 and booking engine guide.

Mobile display and speed

Check that calendars and menus work by touch, that banners do not block the continue button and that the keyboard does not push essential fields off screen. Important conditions should also be available on a small screen.

Core Web Vitals track loading, response and stability. The good thresholds at the 75th percentile are LCP up to 2.5 seconds, INP up to 200 milliseconds and CLS up to 0.1. These thresholds are not a guarantee of a booking or a position on Google.

First, check the main image, file size, fonts, and unnecessary scripts. Images outside the initial viewport can be lazy-loaded; the main image that the user immediately sees requires a different priority.

How to determine which to fix first

An illustrative example: the guest selects a wellness package in Croatian, and the button opens the home page of the engine in English without the package selected. The first job is to check if the engine supports a link that preserves the language and offer. It is a specific hypothesis for a fix, without stating how many additional bookings it would bring.

Sort the results according to whether they block the booking, make it difficult to make a decision or are visual refinement. For each finding, specify the URL, device, steps, responsible person, and method of verification after the change.

Measurement after modification

Compare the start and end of the booking journey with the same definitions and comparable groups of visits. Record changes in price, availability, markets and campaigns. A higher conversion rate during a different season alone does not prove the redesign effect.

Booking engine analytics links recorded steps to bookings. For an initial review, use booking engine checklist and for an assessment of the required work send a hotel audit enquiry. Consulting and implementing changes on the website or booking engine have a separately agreed scope.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important UX element for direct bookings?

The entire journey matters: an understandable offer, an accessible booking call to action, clear conditions and a working booking engine. Prioritise by testing the guest’s actual journey, not by applying one universal rule.

Should I show prices on the website or only in the booking engine?

Guests need easy access to prices and conditions for their selected dates. Show website prices only if you keep them accurate; otherwise, clearly direct guests to availability and current prices in the booking engine.
