Meta Ads for hotels: sales, demand and expectations

Meta Ads can generate demand or convert existing interest, provided the hotel distinguishes prospecting from remarketing and measures actual bookings.

Meta Ads for a hotel is not a substitute for Booking.com or Google Ads, but it can be an important channel for direct bookings if the hotel understands the difference between demand generation and conversion of existing interest. In the Croatian context, where seasonality and dependence on foreign markets dramatically change performance, this difference determines whether the budget is spent or invested.

Sales vs Demand: Two Different Roles

Prospecting (cold audience) creates demand: the guest does not yet know that he wants your hotel, but he reacts to the visual story, location or offer. Here the expectations are different: high CPM, lower conversion rate, longer booking window. The goal is not the current ROAS, but getting the hotel into the guest’s consideration set.

Remarketing (warm audience) converts existing interest: the guest has already visited the website, viewed the rooms or started booking. Here the expectations are higher: lower cost per booking, shorter route to the purchase event. Without enough traffic on the website, remarketing has no audience.

If a hotel mixes these two roles in a single report, it can misjudge the result and conclude that "Meta doesn't work".

A campaign structure that makes sense

Recommended division for a hotel with an active website and booking engine:

Campaign typeAudienceObjectiveOptimization
ProspectingInterests + lookalikesReach, landing page viewThruPlay, LPV
Remarketing webVisitors from the past 7-30 daysBook Now ClickLanding page view
Remarketing bookingbegin_checkout without purchaseBooking completionPurchase (if there is volume)

Choose an optimisation event according to your business goal and signal reliability. Optimization for clicks does not guarantee a quality booking; check the decision in a specific account.

Creative work for hotels

Meta is a visual platform. For the hotel, this means:

  • Video 15-30 seconds - drone footage of the location, room detail, experience (breakfast, pool, view)
  • Carousel - different room categories or seasonal packages
  • UGC style - more authentic than stock photos, especially for the boutique segment

Each creative must have a clear CTA: "Book Direct", "Best Price on the Web" or a seasonal package with dates. Without this, engagement does not mean booking.

Plan creative changes according to offer, frequency of display and result. A fixed number of weeks is no proof that the creative is exhausted.

Measurement: Purchase, not likes

Meta Ads reports ROAS according to its own attribution model. For management, the source of the truth is a verified booking and its status in the booking engine or PMS, not a Meta conversion per se.

Check before launching campaigns:

  1. Meta Pixel or Conversions API connected to a booking engine
  2. Purchase event with value and currency
  3. Cross-domain tracking between the website and booking engine
  4. Comparison of definitions, attribution and data coverage, with explanation of differences

Without this, campaign optimization is a guess. Use booking engine checklist for verification.

Seasonality and budget

Plan your campaign according to the stay dates, hotel opening periods and your own booking window. A calendar month in itself is not a sufficient criterion.

Arrange the budget according to the market, the offer, the size of the available audience and the acceptable cost of booking. Separate media from service fees.

Realistic Management Expectations

There is no ROAS that we can promise in advance to all hotels. The comparison requires the same attribution model, revenue coverage and costs, and the incremental effect of advertising requires a separate assessment.

Compare cost per booking with OTA commission, not just ROAS. The value of the booking itself and ROAS do not prove profitability without margin, cancellations and all relevant costs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for Meta Ads to generate bookings?

Prospecting campaigns typically need 4-8 weeks of creative and audience testing before results stabilise. Remarketing can generate bookings sooner, but only if the website and booking engine receive enough traffic.

Are Meta Ads a replacement for Google Ads for a hotel?

No. Meta is stronger in inspiration and visual storytelling, while Google captures search intent. Choose channels based on objectives, demand and budget; a hotel does not need to use both simultaneously.
