GA4 events for the hotel booking funnel

A measurement plan template for a hotel booking engine: events, triggers, parameters and validation. Includes an abandonment calculation example and the limits of what it shows.

Short answer

A measurement plan links the actual booking engine steps to GA4 events. Distinguish between a Book Now click, viewing an offer, starting checkout and a confirmed purchase. For each purchase, check the transaction identifier, value, currency and risk of duplicates.

The event plan should link the step that the guest really sees with the question to which the hotel team wants an answer. There is no mandatory number of events for each engine. A smaller, verified set is more useful than a series of events that no one knows the meaning of.

Event Plan Template

This is Nikton's working template; it does not imply that every engine follows the same process:

EventAgreed triggerValidation
book_now_clickClick on the link from the website to the bookingOne click gives one event
view_item_listAvailable rooms and rates shownThe list corresponds to the selected dates
select_itemSelected item from the listCorrect room category recorded
view_itemOpen detail of the room, if this step existsDoes not fire on every page view
begin_checkoutReal start of checkoutThe trigger corresponds to the beginning of that step
purchaseEngine confirms the bookingID, amount and currency match the booking confirmation

book_now_click is a custom event. Other listed names are part of Google's list of recommended events. Apply them when the meaning corresponds to the actual behavior; document the special steps of the engine separately.

Purchase: amount, currency and items

In the specification check the transaction_id, currency, value and the field items. According to Google's Purchase Specification, the value of items and tax have a separate role. The hotel and the supplier need to align the mapping of the cost of stay, taxes and fees with this format.

Agree the unit for each item: the whole stay or one night. If you use nights, the quantity and price must produce the expected value. Do not send the total cost of the stay multiplied by the number of nights once more.

During the test, record the expected amount from the booking confirmation and the amount actually sent. The difference between the deposit and the value of the stay must be visible in the report's definition and not hidden in the implementation.

How to calculate abandonment

In GA4 Funnel exploration specify step sequence, time rules and whether the funnel is open or closed. A user who comes directly into the engine may be valuable for sales, but will not satisfy a closed funnel that requires a previous click on the website.

The following is a purely computational example, without client data and without an industry average claim:

StepUsersShare of the previous step
Available rooms viewed200
Start checkout8040%
Confirmed Booking4050%

In this example between room display and checkout, 120 of 200 users did not progress, or 60%. This describes the recorded path. It does not prove that those 120 users were lost because of the price: they could explore, change dates, switch to another device or remain unrecorded.

How to separate the signal from the cause

When the rate changes, first check if there is a change in measurement. Then review availability for advertised dates, minimum stay conditions, price display, form errors, and traffic composition.

Compare the mobile and desktop path over the same period and with enough data. Do not assume in advance that the mobile drop is two or three times greater. With a small number of bookings, one additional booking significantly changes the percentage.

Turn the result into a testable hypothesis: for example, is the continuation button hidden on a particular device? Record the change and monitor a comparable period, taking seasonality and price limitations into account.

Implementation handover checklist

  • A list of events with the correct trigger, domain and person in charge.
  • Confirmation that the events are following the actual steps on the mobile and desktop.
  • Test record of expected and sent values.
  • Check for duplicates after returning or reopening the booking confirmation.
  • An explanation of the behavior with accepted and refused consent.
  • List of known restrictions: iframes, inaccessible steps or inability to connect.

You don’t need to reliably send an event when closing a browser tab to analyze the abandonment. You can observe a recorded initial step with no recorded completion within a defined period; such absence still has measurement limitations.

The next step is the integration of the booking engine and GA4. For an overview of the specific path, see booking engine analytics.

Frequently asked questions

Are all events mandatory?

No. The plan should follow the actual booking engine steps. Use recommended ecommerce events when their meaning matches the step, and document custom events clearly.

Does the biggest drop in the funnel prove why bookings are lost?

No. It shows where to check the experience and measurement. The cause could be availability, price, user intent, a technical error or incomplete data.
